"When my friend booked Howies for lunch he was unaware of a 2 hour table time. When we arrived at Howies we were shown to our table and the 2 hour table time was certainly not mentioned. We were given menus and then we waited and waited then the waiter came and took our drinks order, which was a bottle of wine the waiter seemed very nice and affable. Then we waited and waited and then after maybe 40 minutes our order was taken we were fine with this as we were enjoying the craic. The starter arrived and it was lovely. The main arrived and was good. The same waiter came and asked if we would like a dessert and no mention of being under pressure for the table was mentioned we ordered a dessert. The dessert came and all of a sudden the pressure came on for the table the waiter was unpleasant and rude. We needed the toilet and came back, I met the waiter and asked for the bill to be told that it was on the table waiting to be paid. We were not offered the option to have coffee or any further drinks anywhere else in the restaurant! Being annoyed by this turn of events we challenged the waiter and told him of our disappointment at being treated in this poor manner when we felt that they caused the delay in the first instance 40 mins to take a food order he seemed to think we were wrong. At this stage there was still nobody at our table and still nobody waiting to take the table. I have this to say, the paying customer is always king and staff would do well to remember this. I am a regular diner in Edinburgh and will be taking my custom elsewhere going forwards."

Very impressed, cannot fault anything, food was delicious, the staff were friendly and efficient and the whole operation ran like a well oiled machine.

Busy spot with good food. You would definitely need to make a reservation. Friendly staff and good atmosphere. Maybe a little on the pricy side but not too bad.

Bang average, tiny portions, chaos at door and just a boring menu that they have had for years. Usual commercial wines, dull and tasteless. Deffo for gullible tourists.

We had a great pre theatre meal last Saturday. The food is difficult to beat in terms of balance and flavours. Special mention to the front of house staff, attentive , courteous and friendly. Well worth a visit

The service and food at this restaurant were excellent. The staff was incredibly helpful and positive without being too intrusive. It was a perfect experience. I would definitely go back and will recommend it to my friends.

Came here for my birthday as a recommendation from a colleague. The staff are lovely and attentive. Food was incredible, so tasty and well presented. Got a birthday icecream which was rich and creamy. Would recommend for a romantic evening meal.

My group of 6 had a great experience at this restaurant. The waitress was friendly and the food was fantastic. Although the portions were not large, they were satisfying. I enjoyed the delicious beef casserole, and the steak looked equally appetizing. The atmosphere was very pleasant, and I will definitely return in the future.

We had a wonderful time at Howies. Despite arriving early for our reservation (which is highly recommended due to the restaurant's popularity), we were able to chat with the bartender who provided excellent recommendations for whiskey. We both enjoyed our drinks and I particularly loved the Cullen Skink, a creamy chowder with smoked haddock, potatoes, and leeks. My husband tried the Duo of Scottish beetroot which was flavorful and delicious. For our main courses, I had the salmon special and my husband had the hake, both of which were cooked perfectly and full of flavor. Great for a quick bite! Tried this place after seeing it on Somebody Feed Phil and it 's as good as Phil said. The pulled pork/hog roast is a blank canvas for you to add sauces, so go for something with lots of flavour like their homemade BBQ sauce (the meat is not BBQ flavoured by itself or the sage stuffing and apple sauce. I got the 'Oink ' size which looked small but was just right and filling. I 'd advise going to the cannongate branch instead of this one as it 's got much more seating and was much less busy when I went. "new kapitel has caught my attention after I was on top ten on trip advisor only months after the opening in the oktober last year. that and the fact that it is open for my early january birthday, made it the perfect place to celebrate to become a little older. I was with the man and his family. the man is quite used to my taste and good to the kind of kitchen that would appeal to me for a special occasion; his family not so much and I was filled with shame as his mother scornful went through the menu trying to find something she would enjoy. I've eaten with the family of the man, and I know they enjoy eating, so I think it's a failure of the menu that it is not accessible. the benming always blooming and garnish can appeal to some, but for others it is overcomplicated and it is necessary to find a balance between the two. we start with the starters and I go for venison sour wort pithvier. the venison was underheated and incredibly dry, to the happiness the sourded a little moisturizing and so saved the whole dish, but the aromen were quite not clear, except the garnitur of plastered mushrooms I thoroughly enjoyed. for the largest part we chose a fish dish for our main,- sea trout, smoked muddles, petersilien and coast herbs. where the starter fell, the main recording is getting back. the dish is rich and creamy, and each element adds the complexity of the taste as a whole, without disturbing. the concept is now an old one, and it would be deceptive if it had not worked, as it would essentially pay with this place. I enjoyed my meal in new chapter, although I do not agree with it is stellar status under the hierarchy of edinburgh eateries. it is top ten position is just a flash in the pan of hot popularity, and in time it will be plated in the upper half of the middle stage where it belongs. and that is where it belongs, the dishes can be plated with a michelin star in understood, and the venue and the supporting media has the clean lines and empty slate look of fine but eat the team has a long gone to go if that is their real aim. at the end, although it was a beautiful meal, and cheap (at the moment I would not be surprised to see their prices slowly rise) and the man’s mother found something they enjoyed and that is the most important."
