the markets in London are fantastic, and this one rises as the "foodie" market.

Amazingly creative food in this small, high stool only, no reservation, informal wine bar and restaurant. Food orders from a blackboard menu taken by the bar starting at 6pm and delivered to high tables with stools. No frills, just great food, friendly service with an informal atmosphere, and reasonable prices. We will definitely repeat. Speisekarte ansehen

We came here for lunch and realised what a fantastic restaurant this is. They have a great selection of wines. We tried the Mallard twice, the Pumpkin Fritters, Raw Cauliflower, Seabass Carpaccio, Turnip Quiche, Braised Celery, Pollock and Chantrelles, Haggis and an ice cream dessert. We also had a great bottle of afterdinner wine. Just a superb place, lovely and attentive service!!!

Forget the photos shown above, the food here is NOT boring meat and two veg with gravy as illustrated. Choose interesting dishes from the blackboard you'll need several each, as they are small platefuls but good for sharing) . Be aware that your choices will not all be served together, but as they are cooked, neither do they come with salad or vegetables. All delicious and unusual. Recommended for something different.

Great find at the trail end of maltby market! Arrived without a booking but they had us seated within 45 mins and we’re offered a few glasses of wine on their waiting bench ! Food was great well balanced and delicious small plates to share (would recommend the dumplings) paired with a few glasses of wine. Staff couldn’t have been friendlier and added a touch of homely/casualness to the upscale wine bar. Would recommend for Friday night dinner! Speisekarte ansehen

40 Maltby Street is quite fashionable at the moment, and we did enjoy it but it wasn’t quite what we expected. The food was on the whole good (with the exception of the tomato jelly which we really didn’t like) but the seating was a bit weird- we were sat on a high table directly facing the wall instead of towards the kitchen. The service was friendly but was a bit hard to get at times. It was pretty expensive to have a full meal, as with all small plates restaurants. The wine was really nice but wish they had had a few more by the glass options

40 Maltby is the epitome of the posh Southwark (possible oxymoron) food scene industrial, niche, organic, pricey, and open Thurs Sat. Housed in a railway arch off a council estate, they specialize in organic wine from Serbia (Gergovie wines), and the simply cooked, predominantly modern British European cuisine is just divine organic, freshly sourced produce, their proximity to Borough market is definitely a huge plus. Small plates from simple pork terrines, eggs hollandaise on asparagus perhaps around £6 7, to chops, tarts, salads upto £12, to beautiful, creative dessert, I can't even remember what I have eaten there on the countless sunny Saturdays spent perched at the bar...read more

The food here is seriously well worth the visit. Forget the other small plates along the street and in Hackney which are overhyped. This is the real deal. Each of the 6 plates we had were really tasty and the only one that we did not finish was because we realised ox tongue as not our thing. The menus are up on a chalkboard but are also on their instagram for those who don't like craning their necks. Wines by the glass are limited in selection but staff are happy to recommend you off menu ones. Staff here are lovely they actually close at 10 but on the night we went they were making an exception for all the groups of people clearly enjoying themselves, and never once did we feel like we were...
