"While visiting from Australia, we were in search of a quaint country pub with historical charm, and that is exactly what we found here. The 750-year-old building had low ceilings and a rustic feel, which is to be expected from a pub dating back to the 13th century. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We savored a delicious Sunday roast, embracing the rustic atmosphere we were hoping for. Despite hearing some complaints from city dwellers about the service not meeting Ritz standards, I believe it is important to appreciate the unique charm of this traditional pub. I highly recommend this place for anyone seeking an authentic country experience in England. The host even took the time to greet us and ensure we were satisfied with our meal. His warm demeanor and wild look made us feel right at home. I will definitely be returning with my wife, Lucy, who is from Petersfield and also enjoyed our visit."

Really good Sunday Roast. The Royal Oak was a great find and perfect after a walk at Leonardslee Gardens. Heaps of character and history and a very friendly team.

I just had an amazing lunch at this restaurant. Everything was flawless. The food was excellent, the staff was relaxed, helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu. They were very accommodating with dietary restrictions. I will definitely be returning soon!

We enjoyed an excellent Sunday roast of lamb and belly of pork. The real ale (Harveys) was outstandingly good as always, and the Viognier white wine was also much enjoyed. Young friendly service was very efficient and this is an easy restaurant to recommend: my photos really don’t do justice to the food…

Popped in on our way home to the Royal Oak last night for dinner. Warm welcome from the hospitable staff who were very friendly and helpful during our visit! We both chose the steak and Guinness hotpot topped with potatoes and cheese which was absolutely delicious! Great home cooked food, fantastic flavour and good value.

Have just spent an hour in this pub Staff fantastic ambience calming Unfortunately this visit was spoilt by an obnoxious customer who thought it was his right to constantly hit his dog through out our visit. This was clearly seen by the staff and nothing was said? People on an adjacent table also noticed and decided to leave quickly We found this hugely upsetting.

We enjoyed a delightful meal dining al fresco in the garden of this charming old country pub on a warm summer evening. The food was quite tasty, though the menu was somewhat limited as three main courses were unavailable, including the fish special of the day. Hopefully, this was just a one-time issue as we would be eager to return. The fish platter we shared as a starter and the wild mushrooms on toast were both excellent. The service was friendly and efficient.

Stunning old country pub tucked away in the countryside--everything you'd expect a quality English pub to be--warm and cozy; friendly, welcoming staff; sleepy doggos tucked under bar stools; great beer; and spectacular food. Came here for a Sunday roast with a dear friend and had an *amazing* roast dinner. She chose the lamb, I had the pork belly with crackling. Heaping portions of food--thick, juicy slices of perfectly cooked meat, roast potatoes, no less than four other vegetables, Yorkshires, gravy, the lot! Absolutely delicious. Cleaned our plates and were hankering for some crumble and custard, which sadly wasn't on the menu that day, but had a lovely raspberry and almond frangipane ins...

Phoned to book on Friday for a 2pm lunch for three people on Sunday. Arrived at the pub at 2pm on Sunday and asked where our table was situated and the member of staff pointed towards the corner of the bar. We squeezed our way through the gentlemen propping up the bar to find a tiny table with benched seating access down one side only as the bar was along the other side. I wish I had taken a picture as this was clearly not a table that anyone would ever sit at and the fact that it also never had a reserved sign on it like other tables around the very busy bar, yet know one had decided to sit at it speaks volumes!! Why take our booking when they clearly had no room for us!! Luckily, The Wheat...

"We go to Gravetye 3 or 4 times a year if we can and have been going for many many years over the tenures of several owners. It 's always a complete joy, and the current owner has done a fabulous job of getting the right people in, both inside and out. Tom Coward, the Head Gardener (ex. Dixter) has a vision and a long term plan that make continual visits over an extended period a joy every time we visit we are surprised by the continual changes we learn so much and the garden staff are super helpful and willing to discuss what they 're up to and why. The amazing oval massive kitchen garden that supplies the hotel is a source of wonderment and not to be missed. A visual and culinary feast. We 've never stayed there as we live reasonably close, but have eaten in both the old and new dining rooms many times. The new dining room sits harmoniously between the wings of the manor and although a very modern glass and steel construction, the inclusion of a fabulous antique (and uneven) parquet floor (ex. some french chateau) softens the feel and acoustics, making the room almost intimate. The floor to ceiling windows bring you right into the garden, even in the foulest of weather it 's a triumph of design. Then there 's the food. Apart from the presentation, which is exquisite, the flavours and textures always bring a broad grin, however grumpy I am! This is absolutely first rate British cuisine; the kitchen under Head Chef George Blogg is to be commended, as are the garden staff producing the freshest of produce. I occasionally try to photograph the plates, but invariably find I 've forgotten that rather crass move and have just launched in! Must also mention the front of house staff. Perfectly presented and mannered, they know exactly the boundary between staff and guest and make you feel completely comfortable and relaxed there is nothing stuffy or obsequious about Gravetye everything is pitched just spot on and nothing is too much trouble. We were there today for a birthday treat, but will be back again soon for a post family wedding get together. Cannot recommend too highly just an excellent few hours, whatever the weather. Walkability: Lots of paths. The lower areas are easy for those with limited mobility, however it might be tricky to get up to the kitchen garden if you 're not great on your feet. Food drinks: See my review."
