"I wondered why this restaurant described itself on the board outside as ‘fusion’, why there were so many Korean dishes on the menu and why the serving staff have heard of Asahi beer but haven’t heard of The Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese daily newspaper that is at least 50 years old. The answer is that the Akasaka website isn’t being completely honest when it describes their Northampton branch as a Japanese restaurant. They aren’t really Japanese, although some of their menu items are clearly Japanese. Don’t let that put you off, however, as they are serving excellent food and we enjoyed our meal there very much. It cost us about £70 (inc. 10% tip) for our meal for two people including a 175ml glass of Sauvignon Blanc for my lovely wife and two 330ml bottles of Asahi Dry for me. The sushi was excellent, the edamame beans were great but we didn’t feel that the Dolsot Bibimbap (a Korean dish with loads of rice, some shredded vegetables, prawns and a fried egg on top) offered very good value for money at just under sixteen pounds. We would recommend Akasaka in Northampton and would certainly go there again, but if we want a genuinely Japanese meal, prepared and served by Japanese staff, then we will be sticking to Ginza Restaurant on Wellingborough Road in Northampton. Don’t like the way that the male members of staff at Sakura on Bridge Street speak to their female colleagues, very disrespectful, so we avoid that Japanese restaurant nowadays. Great to have a choice of three Japanese restaurants in Northampton post-pandemic, and our favourite of the three is Ginza."

Fantastic hidden gem. Been here a couple of times and each time is a delight. Good sushi, sashimi, authentic Asian food. A favourite place to treat friends and family.

This was a pre theatre dinner for the two of us. Everything about it was just lovely. Friendly service, great food, nice place and reasonably priced. Our first visit but we’d recommend.

The place was very quiet for a Friday night which was surprising because this really is a hidden gem for anybody who likes sushi or Asian fusion. If you like like Wagamamas, come here, it’s like that but a league better.

Amazing food. Went on a week night and the restaurant was quiet, but our server was so friendly. We got sushi starters, main course dishes and dessert and it was all incredible. It wasn’t too expensive either and tasted delicious. 10/10.

Had the best Ramen ever here at the weekend. The service was great and not rushed and totally enjoyable until the bill arrived and was presented with 4 cans of coke £14, that is £3.50 per can. For that I could have bought a multi pack of 24.

Were visiting the town and happened across the restaurant while surfing t’internet (wouldn’t have found it otherwise). Not disappointed at all. The service staff were friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the food. The food itself was amazing.

Great food and service! Sushi was excellent, we shared a mixed platter, which was varied and tasty and super fresh. You can see the sushi chef making the sushi to order if you sit further towards the back of the restaurant! There’s a good mix of hot mains too if you don’t want to just eat sushi. Their Korean bibimbap is delicious.

Catered for an audience who has no experience with real japanese cuisine. Literally deep fried gyoza; instant noodles ramen with added msg; sainsbury packet udon noodles with shop bought sweet sour sauce. The only positive was the maki roll and very well cooked chicken thigh. For £13, I would settle with frozen or precooked ramen but to my thorough disappointment, the noodles are curly and taste suspiciously identical to instant chicken pot noodles. Not sure I'd trust the quality of the raw seafood if the chef can't even bother to source- not let alone make some fresh noodles.
