"We stayed at this restaurant for my partner's birthday and it was an incredible experience from beginning to end! Sharmain was our main point of contact during our stay and she was outstanding - friendly, approachable, and provided excellent customer service. All of the front of house staff were also excellent. Our room was beautiful with a four-poster bed, open fire, and a spacious bathroom, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. The ambience in the bar and dining areas was perfectly homely and inviting. The food was top-notch - we had the cheese soufflé and steak tartare for starters, both delicious, followed by duck and pork mains, both outstanding. We finished off with cheese and biscuits and a glass of port. The breakfast the next morning was also amazing, with the treacle bread being a highlight with my salmon, avocado, and poached eggs. Overall, a perfect 10/10 experience. Sharmain is a valuable asset to this restaurant and we will definitely be returning."

First time visiting and won't be the last. All staff where amazing which complimented the fantastic food. We enjoyed it so much we booked the last room available for new years eve. As we only live in Kendal we will be visiting regularly, you wont be disappointed here.

Visited on a Sunday evening. The service was impeccable, attentive but not intrusive. Gravadlax starter was excellent and my wife’s pate was superb. Our mains were a pork loin special with a black pudding sausage roll. Absolutely delicious. I forced myself to indulge in the chocolate and raspberry dessert and I wasn’t disappointed.

Beautiful little gem in a lovely secluded spot. Our second visit here once again it was superb from start to finish. Nothing was too much trouble our host for dinner (Charmaine) was simply charming. Our room (15) was stunning. 4 poster bed, massive bathroom a beautiful open fire, just perfect Couldn’t recommend this place more highly!! Speisekarte ansehen

The breakfasts were as close to perfect as you can get! We do a lot of long distance walking and have experienced many B&B breakfasts this was one of the best! Excellent porridge and very well cooked variations on the full English, all served by a friendly and helpful housekeeper. (we also had supper here one night, and this was excellent as well)

Lovely staff friendly and professional. Starter was lovely a scotch egg made of rice with a curry sauce. Friends had southern fried mushrooms. Very different and very lovely. My main was a let down. Sea bream . Beautifully cooked but completely overwhelmed by a soup of tandoori sauce. Desserts had way too much gelatine in them. You could have bounced the pannacotta off the wall

Did not live up to recommendations. The menu was very limited, no lighter lunch options, and overpriced. Some menu options required ordering a side dish of potatoes as extra, only chips available at £6 per portion. Pesto and cauliflower mac n cheese was particularly tasteless and disappointing at £19! Basic steak and chips came at £32 with only a couple of onion rings and a sprinkling of watercress as garnish and was very average. There are much better places for lunch in the area so we won't be returning. Speisekarte ansehen

I would like to summarise this review in three ways. Firstly we had food that was absolutely fantastic, it was really well presented and tasted amazingly. The menu was big enough to give choice and the quality was the highlight. Secondly we were disturbed by a large amount of flies that spoilt the atmosphere maybe it was the humid weather but it appeared nothing was in place to deal with them. Thirdly the craft beer on sale seemed to have no body at all, you may say we should have chosen wine to compliment the food but I like a good pint of beer and I was disappointed with the choice. I have given 5 stars because it was all about the food which was above and beyond.

I had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant three times in one week while staying near the village. When you walk through the door, it feels like stepping into the perfect English pub. It reminded me of the pub in the holiday film, so cozy and welcoming. My favorite drink of the week was the Old Smithy Porter at 4.7%. Our first meal was amazing. I had the lamb with minted peas, a small lamb pie, fancy potatoes, and gravy. My wife enjoyed the sea bream and a big crab cake. For dessert, we shared a delicious chocolate torte. The chef and staff did a fantastic job. Make sure to try the specials, as the chef enjoys experimenting with new dishes for the guests. The cheese souffle was incredib...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
