"Had it not been for the promotional videos by James May we would never have known about The Royal Oak. The positives. Good size car park. (Lane leading to is a bit narrow for those with Sunday funday cars. Nice pub, atmosphere and very helpful, friendly staff. The food served for both evening meal and breakfast was very good. Eating in the oak room is very pleasant. The bed in our room, excellent. The rainfall shower and the hot water heating excellent. The negatives. First impressions of the accommodation is a very worn stair carpet and walls scuffed from people dragging bags. A narrow cluttered passageway that seems to be the office? Our room and en-suite wasn't clean. We were disturbed by other guests, dogs, and noisy bathroom extraction fans. This is not the fault of The Royal Oak or the owners, but it did affect the quality of our stay and sleep. The breakfast experience is poor. The food itself is fine, but the overall experience not so much. If nearby again we would visit for a drink and a meal, but not to stay. The accommodation is not good value for money, the bar and restaurant are reasonably priced."

Spent the night, had dinner and breakfast. Everything was top-notch. And yes, the Ashcombe room is quirky. Nearby activities: Not far from Stonehenge, if that 's your sort of thing. Safety: As it says, Mind your head in the Ashcombe room. Food drinks: Best pub meals I 've ever had. Unfair even to say pub meals . Rooms: 4 Service: 5 Location: 3 Hotel highlights: Quiet

This was a solo visit and again the Royal Oak excelled in all areas : especially in the area of customer service where I was very well looked after .I watched the rugby in the bar and this added to the atmosphere (although I know the TV is only on for exceptional occasions which totally suits me). My Flat iron steak was perfect as well as the accompanying glasses of wine. Breakfast also fabulous . Again one of the best pubs in the country . I will be back . Well done the The Royal Oak team. Had dinner here with some work colleagues en route to Southampton. What a lovely pub and village. Extremely good quality food and service and very good value. I was hoping to see Mr May, my hero, the part owner, but of course he's not here that often. One day perhaps! Anyway I can highly recommend. Just be sure to take it easy if you are driving there as the roads are very narrow. Be courteous and don't create a traffic jam by getting jammed head on into a large piece of farm machinery ; Food drinks: Excellent selection and quality

The pub looked great. The staff were friendly. We both ordered and half way through my starter I was told the fish had a wash of fennel. I had already told them I had an intolerance to fennel. The waitress informed me of this and said there was a minute amount. My steak came up lovely and pink but it had not been rested and there was a large pool of blood on my plate. Not a great main. The pudding was descri bed as "dark chocolate mousse with cherries, pistachios and coffee icecream our waitress informed me it would be milk chocolate. I agreed it would be fine. What arrived looked like a cowpat with cherries and cecream. No pistachios. This was a step too far and it was sent back. The charge...

"We stayed here ten years ago and thought it was wonderful and worth every penny. We were so excited to return, but really Disapointed. The grounds are lovely and we were pleased with our room. The children loved the outdoor space and the pool What really let us down was the food and service. There was no luxury here. The family dining choices were poor. The children's meal was bad one had fish gougons and sweet potato fries which were very salty. The other two had pizza, the small was served as half a pizza, the large was a conventional round shape. Both were shop bought bases (cardboard) with grated Cheddar on the top. Something I would not feed them at home let alone expect in a supposedly high end dining. My husband's steak was chewy. My main, whole plaice with creamed potatoes, the potato was served in a ceramic dish and it was cold. It was taken away and then took ten minutes to return by which point I had eaten the fish. The food was incredibly expensive considering how poor the offerings were. The next day we ate a very late lunch in Bath so we would not have to eat at the hotel. The breakfast buffet area had some nice items but was really understocked and allowed to run to empty. The staff functioned but not at a steady rate, we found the service slow and the staff disinterested. Such a contrast to our previous visit. The person in charge we found sullen and felt as if our presence was an inconvenience. When we walked through to the dining areas we would hop out of the staff'so way for fear of being bulldozed. When we left the receptionist was polite but did not ask if we enjoyed our stay. A week later I had an email to complete a survey and nobody got in touch despite the same feedback as given here. Very dispointing. Lovely room and surroundings but poor food and poor attitude from staff. Last year we stayed in a hotel that cost 65% less than Wooley Grange and had a much better experience."
